When Dutch photographer Han Lans visited South Africa with his son he was struck by his son s observations I found the people s homes sad and poor, but the people were not They were extremely friendly and cheerful After going back to visit South Africa on his own Lans decided to explore the reason why despite the hardships they had suffered through apartheid South Africans seemed to be able to live peacefully with one another and have a positive attitude toward life This seem to be true even with all of the various cultures, and faiths found in South Africa Lans decided to look toward the children of South Africa for the answer He gave cameras to 12 children between the ages of 10 13 from different areas around the country that included various ethnic, religious, and economic levels He told the children to take pictures and keep a diary of their daily lives for three months This book is their completed reporting on their lives I found it a fascinating read An inside look into the homes of 12 very different South African homes.

When teaching students about the history of South Africa, this book would be a valuable resource Filled with pictures taken by children, they are expressive and real You can imagine being there with the children as they show you their schools and homes.
